Rachel was born in 2004 with high muscle tone Cerebral Palsy and has a global learning delay. Rachel is unable to talk or operate a normal or electric wheelchair – meaning her only means of independent mobility is crawling on her knees – which she loves to do – never missing opportunity to venture out into the garden.

However, Rachel’s jeans were unable to withstand the impact of her crawling for very long meaning regular replacement was required – and she was experiencing problems with very sore knees.

Rachel’s mum approached Dressability for advice, who suggested adding padding and hard wearing knee patches to her jeans. Specialist materials were identified to provide an ideal solution.

Andy, 32, was born with no hands, arms just above elbow length and one leg which ends at the knee – meaning he wears a prosthetic leg.  In the past, he has had to rely on family to alter clothes for him but after encountering Dressability’s work through the BBC, Andy got in contact, came for a visit and has kept us busy ever since!

The alterations Dressability make for Andy have included widening his shirts to accommodate his protruding left hip and shortening and tightening sleeves to avoid gaping; and adapting his trousers to allow Andy to use a flexible metallic stick and a magnetic pin badge to push down and pull up the zip, when need arises.

Paralysed from the chest down, Danny found it very difficult to transfer safely from his wheelchair to a shower seat – and as a consequence of his anxiety re the risk of falling,  his showering routine had become a “nerve wracking and dangerous” experience.

Danny was determined to find strategies to overcome the range of new obstacles he found himself encountering as a person with disabilities, and approached the team at Dressability to discuss whether a remedy to his difficulty showering could be found.
