Dressability joins forces with Action Through Enterprise to help ease Ghana period poverty
Let’s talk about female ‘period’ poverty. “Period poverty is a lack of access to sanitary products due to financial constraints*”. Period poverty in Ghana is a serious issue – a study done in the Zabzugu and North Dayi districts found that 95% of girls in the region missed school due to menstruation.
Here at Dressability we are making a difference to these girls lives by providing many of them with reusable sanitary wear. Our wonderful volunteers and our incredible seamstress (pictured) have been hard at work producing sanitary wear during our three-month project, ending in September 2021. The sanitary wear will then be shipped to Ghana by our collaborative charity, Action Through Enterprise (ATE), with many girls receiving a bag with five sanitary towels which will make a huge difference to their lives by dramatically improving their hygiene options, giving many women their dignity and the means to manage a basic need.
Our hope is to alleviate the stigma surrounding menstruation and, by providing reusable sanitary wear, we hope to allow girls to attend school while menstruating.

Dressability featured in new issue of Swindon Link
Over the years we’ve continued to highlight the need to provide altered and adapted clothing for those with limited dexterity so were delighted to receive the attention of Swindon Link magazine this month.
Dressability has been featured in the latest July edition of Swindon Link magazine, highlighting Annabel Robson, our new admin assistant. Following a brain injury in 2006 at just 18 years of age, we worked with Annabel for over five years on altered clothing such as baby grow poppers and nursing bras to help her as a new parent.
Now everything has come full circle as Annabel joins the Dressability team, working together with us to continue helping those who need practical clothing solutions for everyday problems.

Help us spread period poverty awareness and provide sanitary wear to communities in need
It was a real pleasure today to meet with Suresh Gattapur, Councillor for Westlea, to discuss the issues around female ‘period’ poverty. Suresh is involved in an initiative by Mast the Magazine (MTM) to tackle female period poverty and has been asking for donations of sanitary wear products. Here at Dressability, we have been making our own!
Suresh is working to provide sanitary wear to the remote island of Lamu in Kenya, with the support of local charities such as the Huris Foundation Faza. Suresh hopes to create awareness and avenues of support to provide sanitary towels to girls in deprived communities.
Dressability’s own project will run until September 2021 and our homemade sanitary towels will be sent to women in Ghana by our collaborative charity Action Through Enterprise. Many women will receive a bag containing five reusable sanitary towels which will dramatically and hygienically change their lives, giving dignity and a basic need to many women. The material that we have been using has all been kindly donated to us by local people and organisations.

Fundraisers Cover 10K to Raise Funds for Dressability
The virtual 2021 Vitality London 10k is taking place as we speak, so participants are invited to complete a 10K between the 29th May to the 6th June 2021.
We are delighted that a kind group of individuals are taking part to raise funds for Dressability.
