Young Mum, Annabel who suffered a serious brain injury in 2006 following an accident whilst at University, approached Dressability following the birth of her son in 2016, to ask if we might be able to help with enabling her to cope with the demands of a new baby.
Annabel has limited dexterity meaning she struggles with fastenings and although she wanted to nurse her baby, was concerned the small clips on nursing bras might make this difficult. Knowing the very young can occasionally be rather impatient – and determined to make it possible for Annabel to feed her baby, the team at Dressability decided that replacing fiddly hooks and eyes with magnets might offer the best solution.
The adaptation worked – and Annabel was able to enjoy bonding with her baby, free from worries re being unable to respond quickly to his needs.
Since then, Dressability has replaced poppers on baby-grows with easy-fastening solutions to make changing easier – adapted some of Annabel’s clothing to enable her to wear items which express her individual style – and, because Annabel finds threading a needle very difficult, carried out minor repairs to items for the family, as and when required.Annabel says “Dressability has substantially improved my quality of life by enabling me to nurse and dress my baby with ease – instead of spending ages fighting with fiddly poppers” – and reports that the work carried out by our dressmakers has attracted much admiration from her friends, as they face daily challenge(s) with difficult fastenings.
